Ahh, the joys of college dining hall food. Nothing more delicious than a dried out piece of mystery meat and crunchy, yellow broccoli, am I right?
Wrong. I don’t know about your school, but my dining hall is far from delicious. I’ve always enjoyed eating a fairly healthy diet, and the caf just doesn’t serve wholesome food. This year has been tough because since I live in a dorm, I don’t have a kitchen. My stomach honestly could not take it if I ate at the dining hall every day, so I’ve had to improvise and learn to live on a microwave meal diet.
I usually go to the grocery store once a week, which I know is so unusual for someone who doesn’t even have a kitchen, but buying my own groceries and eating my own food just makes me feel a lot better. While I do have to eat in the cafeteria sometimes (my school forces those living on campus to have a meal plan), I have a pretty nice stash of food under my bed and in my mini fridge. Today, I’m sharing with you my ultimate healthy college grocery list!
PRODUCE & FROZEN FOODS
Canned Peaches & Pears (They last longer!)
Frozen Mixed Fruit (For Smoothies!)
Green Giant Steamer’s Broccoli or Green Beans (These are great to pop in the microwave!)
Blake’s Frozen Dinners (These are all-natural and perfect microwave dinners that aren’t sketchy. My favorites are the Mac & Cheese and Four Cheese Ravioli.)
Soft Pretzels (My favorite late-night snack!)
Perdue Simply Smart Chicken Strips (My absolute favorite thing to make in the microwave for dinner!)
Cheese Slices (I love to eat cheese and crackers for a snack.)
GRAINS & NUTS
Cereal (My two staples are Peanut Butter Panda Puffs and Special K, but I’ve been loving Cinnamon Crunch recently. It takes JUST like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but without all the added sugar and preservatives.)
Granola (For Yogurt)
Annie’s Instant Mac & Cheese Cups
Mott’s Fruit Snacks (For my sugar fix!)
Granola Bars (A must for those 8 AM classes when you don’t have enough time for breakfast!)
Orange Juice (for smoothies!)
Starbucks Vanilla Coffee
And there you have it! The ultimate healthy college grocery list! Feel free to customize it to your liking. I just wanted to show you that it is possible to have a healthy diet in college if you are willing to put in a little extra cash and effort. Of course, I still do not eat as healthy as I should, but having my own food to choose from is much better than the dining hall. I can’t wait to live in an apartment next year so I can have a kitchen and start cooking again!
